Current Situation of the Dental Sector

During the last years, the dental sector in our country has undergone disproportionate growth. In Spain there are currently, approximately, some 35.550 chartered dentists and around 26.500 Dental clinics, that is almost a 5 % more than existed in 2014.

• Spain maintains excessively high numbers

With these figures, Spain maintains excessively high numbers in relation to its number of inhabitants, since the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the existence of 1 dentist for each 3.500 population; in Europe, this figure reaches an average of 2.000 people per dentist; these figures are widely exceeded in our country, that says, approximately, with 1 dentist for each 1.500 citizens.

• Increase in franchises and insurers

Other data that, from "Delyser Abogados", we want to highlight is the increase in franchises and insurers in the dental sector. These establishments have continued to increase the number of clinics, and represent, today, the 5,3 % of centers in Spain with more than 1.000 franchise centers and more than 400 branches of insurers. However, private clinics continue to represent a large percentage majority in Spain.

It is also important to note that franchised clinics and insurance companies, -driven by very aggressive advertising policies and large investments backed by large companies and investment groups-, has its counterpart in the experience perceived by patients; that is to say, which between 2013 and the 2015 there has been a significant increase in complaints filed against insurance and franchise clinics before the different registries and official entities. A reality that reflects, which, for every complaint in a private clinic, they were received 4 against an insurance company clinic and 25 by franchised clinic.

• Constant visits to the dentist

One last piece of information, that we consider important for the owner or entrepreneur of a dental clinic, is the fact that seven out of ten Spanish adults have visited the dentist less than a year ago ...
